Hi, Im looking towards pursuing a career as a datbase administrator. With this in mind I would like to ask a few questions.
What areas of expertise do I need to look at? What traing would I need to pursue? Is the MCDBA worth doing? Is there any good books out there? Basically any advice on becoming a DBA, i.e. the right path to tread etc?
Thanks

It depends on which type of DBA you want to be: Network or application. Some things are the same for both types, checking restores for example, but the network DBA spends most of his or her time maintaining the system on the network, investigating logs, etc. The application DBA is a member of the development team, has some maintenance responsibilities, but spends most of his or her time creating stored procedures, scripts, etc.
Depends on what type of DBA (again). Network DBAs need to pursue network information. Application DBAs should pursue code development.
MCDBA - a big maybe. If the enviroment you work in likes it, then yes. If not, then ignore it. I would not spend the money on it before you have your job and after you have the job, it may not matter.
Lots of books on being a SQL Server DBA - Amazon returns a list with those keywords. Choose books that have been given a 5-star rating by other reviewers.
Depends on the type of DBA.
