Hello,

What's best practice for AD DNS servers on a multi-site/domain network? Should the DC on each site be configured as AD DNS and point to itself or is that overkill? We have about 2000 workstations distributed across 5 sites. 3 DCs on main site, 1 DC for each branch site. 100Mb reliable links between sites. Forest and Domain FL 2003.

One could debate whether DCs in sites with a 100Mb connection are actually required, but that's a question of the individual network requirements, and since you have DCs out on the sites anyway, there's no harm in adding DNS as well and using it in the sites as primary DNS, with at least one DC in the main site as additional DNS.
If you have AD integrated DNS, it's as easy as installing DNS on the site DCs and configuring forwarders (if necessary) - AD replication will take care of the rest.
